Piranesi Digital

State Art Gallery Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe Albums

Each of the nearly 300 drawings was digitized. The results of art historians and art technologists then had to be transferred to the database. Countless metadata and images in correct naming and size had to be entered into the database. In addition to the various digitizations, scientific essays and some features were also incorporated. Furthermore, image orders and copyrights had to be requested and cataloged from other institutions.

Corbel from the Constantine Arch

This drawing from Piranesi’s workshop was one of the most extensively analyzed. Consequently, a large amount of data had to be incorporated. The image on the left links to the artwork’s general webpage, where one can find the work’s details and, in various chapters, the art historical and art technological assessments. Included there is a hotspot tool that allows viewers to examine various important details in greatly enlarged form and receive explanations through text.

The left image links to the so-called Zoom Tool. This section allows for an almost microscopic enlargement of the drawings. Stored and accessible through the left menu are the various multispectral photographs. These are particularly important for the art-technological determination.
